An exciting trend that has almost become a trademark for Maldives are its spas which conjure up images of long days filled with mud baths and meditation, exquisitely prepared spa cuisine and fragrant groves. Maldives offers a variety of such spa facilities to tourists and tourism in Maldives is certainly progressing as tourists throng its spa centers.

The spas' sole purpose is to help lead a healthier lifestyle through treatments, exercises and educational programs. Spa packages offer a stay of three to seven nights where spa cuisine is served exclusively.

Entire resorts and hotels are allocated to spa therapy. Services include fitness classes and spa cuisine and prove to be the best option for business travelers and families.
Medical spas offer treatments that require a doctor's supervision, such as laser resurfacing and Botox. Mineral Spring spas have natural mineral, thermal or sea water that is used in hydrotherapy treatments.

Spa resorts in Maldives are world renowned for the finest, luxury spa services and treatments for health - offering tourists total relaxation and rejuvenation with blends of traditional elements such as native flowers, special scents, tropical herbs, fruits and spices plus modern advancements featuring jacuzzi, steam bath, pool, sauna and health and fitness facilities. The spas emphasize use of aroma and touch therapy.

The spas are often termed as havens of peace and tranquility and are managed by professionals experienced in a range of specialist treatments including aroma therapy, foot acupressure, scalp, Shiatsu, Swedish and Thai massages.

Body care treatments consist of salt scrubs, body and herbal wraps whereas beauty care is available in facials, manicures, pedicures, eyelash tinting and waxing. Mind and Body Balancing techniques on offer are acupuncture, aikido, taichi and yoga. They prove to be excellent sources of relaxation as they focus positive streams of energy. Treatment Baths such as Cleopatra, exotic flower, detoxifying and sea weed are a treat for tired bodies and souls.

Visiting a spa gives people the opportunity to jumpstart a healthy lifestyle, reconnect with loved ones or just get away and enjoy the breath-taking vistas of the beautiful bays.
The beauty of Maldives islands is indeed addictive. Secluded serenity, thrilling water sports, soothing spas and relaxing beaches all wrapped in the comfort of modern amenities encourage tourists to go through the experience time and again. From a very humble and modest beginning in the 1970s with two tourist resorts, tourism in Maldives has evolved and matured into an industry, which is a key player of the domestic economy. By 2,000 the number of resorts stood at 87, having a total bed capacity of more than 15,000. There were more than 2,500 beds in other tourist accommodating facilities such as hotels, guest houses and safari vessels.

The number of tourists, mainly from Europe, increased from 1,100 in 1972 to 280,000 in 1994. In 2000, tourist arrival exceeded 466,000. Maldives is today successfully promoted for its natural assets for tourism. The industry accounts for 28% of the country's GDP and more than 60% of foreign exchange receipts. Over 90% of the tax revenue comes from import duties and tourism-related taxes.
