"Regional Cooperation: a catalyst for Socio-Economic Growth in South Asia"
Regional cooperation is one of the most important phenomena in the world today which is becoming inevitable as the process of globalisation is still at large. The world has become increasingly interdependent, and regional trading blocs are fast taking centre stage in global trade. However, trade barriers and the structural asymmetries in the South Asian economies have limited the scope for trade and thus South Asia has one of the lowest levels of intra-regional trade in the world.
Regional cooperation is crucial for the developing economies in South Asia as it leads to technological advancement, human resource development, tourism promotion, increased business linkages, interaction of people and eventually generates billions of dollars of income, employment and trade.
The Heads of States, at the 11th SAARC Summit held at Katmandu, Nepal in 2002, renewed their commitment to encourage participation of the private sector and assured full support for their economic initiatives. Their reaffirmation of the commitment culminated in to 1st SAARC Business Leaders Conclave which was held at New Delhi in 2005 and the 2nd at Mumbai in, 2007. On conclusion, the South Asian Business Community found the forum very useful for striking new partnerships, exploring business opportunities and sharing best practices among business sectors of the region.
