All this still exists in other countries of South Asia on a large scale. While in India, a huge country, with the 4th largest population in the world and an aim to become a super power, things under went changes rapidly. A large number of people got educated, religions became flexible in tolerating each other, people started moving their families abroad and the current generation - alike generations in other countries - became less strictly religious. India started to produce technology of its own. There are millions of people using internet today and internet dating is as casual as going to cinema these days. To make things easier for people, Indian investors created matrimonial sites. This made things smoother for young people to find a life partner of their choice - or in fast moving world, requirements.
There is a huge data base of Indian males on these matrimonial sites. With time, not only the method of choosing a life partner has changed but also the preferences. Women of India - as in the past - demand a good looking, rich guy with a liberal mindset. His family should like her, respect her and should belong to the same religion. But men, now, are touching the limits of being practical. They want a - what they called years ago in America - the "Barbie doll" wife. A young Kareena or Katrina figured girl who is not only from a respected family background, but should also be highly educated, broad-minded -that is liberal - and should have a potential of earning money. Last preference point, she should be able to do all house chores to maintain a clean house and must not object to taking care of her in-laws. Going to shop groceries can be negotiated.
Does that sound mean and bad? There is a perspective to everything. It is of course not necessary for men to make their wives do all the house chores and a job both at the same time. All the reason behind this reasoning of Indian men is being practical to fulfill the dream of being successful and provide a better future for their families. There is nothing wrong with listing preferences for marriage. The matrimonial sites here, are playing a very positive role. Indians living abroad often desire an Indian wife while people living in India want to get married to an Indian living abroad. Both the situations aim at different ends. Indians abroad want to bring a new family member who has lived in their culture and is aware of the traditions and norms. While people living in India, seek for a better future outside the country. An easy way out from the country is marriage to people living in the country one wishes to go to.
When all the matrimonial sites went on the internet, they were charged of scams and what not. Later though, people and especially men, realized how useful such sites can be. These are some of the sites with large databases of Indians, belonging to several religions. The sites are not responsible for any marriage mishap though, as these are just a means for people to find life partners they deem best for themselves. Change in preferences of Indian men has encouraged girls to study hard and look beautiful though there is hardly a change in preferences of young females. There is a large minority of Indians who do not bother about marrying in the same religion now. All they want is a Barbie Doll, it seems.
